Division V: Junior Dairy

Arrival Time:    6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday before the fair begins for non-milking heifers.

                          7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday of the Fair or 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday of the fair for milking dairy cows;                                           milking dairy cattle may leave immediately following the dairy show

 

Dismissal Time:  One hour after the show or 12:00 a.m. Sunday after the fair

                             7 p.m. Monday, Dairy Show, Gibbons Arena

           

Dairy Show Classes:

Showmanship

1:  Senior (ages 16 – 19)

2:  Intermediate (ages 13 – 15)

3:  Junior (ages 8 – 12)

4:  Adult (age 19 & older)

5:  Peewee (ages 5 - 8)

  1. Spring Heifer Calf (born 3/1/24 – 5/31/24)

  3. Fall Heifer Calf (born 9/1/23 – 11/30/23)

  4. Summer Yearling Heifer (born 6/1/23 – 8/31/23)

  6. Winter Yearling Heifer (born 12/1/22 – 2/28/23)

  7. Fall Yearling Heifer (born 9/1/22 – 11/30/22)

  8. 2-Year-Old Cow (born 9/1/21 – 8/31/22)

  9. 3-Year-Old Cow (born 9/1/20 – 8/31/21)

  10. 4-Year-Old Cow and Older (born before 9/1/20)

  11. Dry Cow (any age)

General Rules

  1. See General Rules for Junior Livestock Exhibitors for more information.

  2. Exhibitors must have possession and care of their project exhibition animals by the second Saturday in May of the current year. Dairy Cattle may be leased provided the member has approval of the 4-H Educator or their FFA Advisor. Lease paperwork must be turned into Ohio State University Extension office by the second Saturday in May.

  3. DAIRY HERDSMAN AWARD:  The Dairy Herdsman Award will be awarded to a Junior Dairy Exhibitor.  The award will be given based on the following criteria:  Care & grooming of their animal(s), cleanliness in their stall area, helpfulness toward other exhibitors, and showing courtesy and good sportsmanship to others during the fair.  There will be a Junior Herdsman (age 8 -13) and Senior Herdsman (age 14 – 18).

  4. All exhibitors of dairy cattle need to submit an animal identification and project registration form for projects brought to the fair, either an ear tag number or tattoo number, to the JFB Office between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. by the second Saturday in May.  Lease form is turned in to Ohio State University Extension office by the first Saturday in May.  Any exhibitor who does not submit a form will not exhibit at the fair.  All dairy cattle must have a tag or tattoo with the proper identification number upon arrival on the fairgrounds that matches the tag-in paperwork.

  5. Dairy Cattle Leasing Requirements:

    1. Only members who do not own or have access to owning dairy cattle are permitted to lease.  An exhibitor who owns dairy cattle may not lease other project animals.

    2. Leasing is limited to two (2) animals per member.

    3. Leased animals may be housed at an exhibitor’s residence or other accessible location by previous arrangement.

    4. Exhibitors of leased animals are responsible for the care, upkeep, and expenses of the animal while in their possession per agreement with the owner.

  6. Exhibitors may only show two animals per class.

  7. Drug Use Notification Forms (DUNF) must be submitted on all lactating animals to the fair vet or designee at check-in. Forms will be available in the Junior Fair Board Office prior to check-in.

  8. Any exhibitor showing a lactating animal must attend one Quality Assurance training or pass the test-out option.

  9. Dairy Showmanship:

Junior – age 8 thru 12 years

Intermediate – ages 13 thru 15 years

Senior – ages 16 thru 18 years

Adult – ages 19 and over and not eligible for Junior Fair membership.

  1. Past winners in the junior and intermediate age groups must move to the age group regardless of the exhibitor’s age.

  2. Past senior winners may compete in the senior division again.

  3. Winners will be chosen from each division. They will compete for overall champion showman and the right to go to the Showman of Showman unless,

    • They are a previous winner of Showman of Showmen Contest.

    • Or they represented the species the previous year in the Showman of Showmen Contest

  4.  If the champion showman in ineligible for Showman of Showman Contest, the judge will determine an alternate.
